Do Shiny Pokemon Survive the Trip?
Good news for hunters: shininess travels.
Shininess is a permanent property of a Pokemon, so the short answer is reassuring: a shiny stays shiny through every transfer. A shiny caught in Generation III will still sparkle in Scarlet and Violet decades later.
What can change
The shiny status itself never changes, but a few related things can:
- Older shinies were determined by stats, so a small number of "legacy" shinies exist that modern games still honor.
- Held items (including any you gave your shiny) are stripped on one-way migrations - remove them first.
- Some games cannot receive a species at all due to regional dex limits, but that is about the species, not the shininess.
The collector tip
Because shininess survives, the Virtual Console revival path is a legitimate way to bring a genuinely old shiny into the modern games. Just remember every upward step is permanent.
