The Virtual Console versions of the original games run on 3DS and, unlike the real cartridges, can use Poke Transporter to send Pokemon into Pokemon Bank. This is the only path by which a Generation I species can legally reach the modern games.

These 3DS re-releases recreated the original Game Boy link cable wirelessly - and crucially, gained the ability to reach Pokemon Bank.
