Generation III reinvented how Pokemon data is stored and severed all connection to Gen I and II. Within Gen III it trades freely (including with FireRed/LeafGreen), and it is the oldest point from which a Pokemon can begin the long climb to the modern games via Pal Park.

Did you know?

Generation III stored Pokemon in encrypted data blocks, a security change that is a big reason it could not talk to the older Game Boy games.
