Time Capsule

Trade between Generation I and II.

The Time Capsule lets Generation II games (Gold, Silver, Crystal) trade back and forth with Generation I games (Red, Blue, Yellow) - the only time the franchise allowed a brand-new generation to trade with the previous one.

Because Generation I has no concept of held items, abilities, or the new Gen II moves, the Time Capsule enforces a strict rule: a Pokemon may only pass through if it is one of the original 151 species and knows only moves that existed in Generation I. Held items are stripped before the trade. This two-way bridge is unique - it would never happen again.

Step by step

  1. 1

Wait roughly one in-game day after starting your Gen II adventure for the Time Capsule to open in any Pokemon Center.

  2. 2

Make sure the Pokemon is in the National Dex range 1-151.

  3. 3

Remove any held item and any Generation II moves.

  4. 4

Trade as normal through the upstairs link room.
